The Hauppauge-based certified public accounting and business-advisory firm has promoted five longtime principals – Jill Gunzel, Kenneth Laks, Lawrence Lucarelli, James O’Connor and Thomas Ruggiero – to its partner team.

The quintet grows the partner team ranks to 17 professionals offering a range of services to businesses and industries throughout Long Island and the Metro New York region. The promotions were announced first during a June employee-only town hall meeting and in private client communications.

AVZ Managing Partner Thomas Murray said the 65-year-old firm is “proud of the accomplishments of each new member of our Partner Team.”

“We have taken this opportunity recognize them and to enable our clients to more fully leverage their talents and expertise,” Murray said in a written statement. “It has been our experience that the combined effort of all our partners yields greater results than the sum of any individual efforts.”

The new partner team members represent a spectrum of specialized services. Gunzel, who joined AVZ in 1999, specializes in accounting and auditing, business and strategic planning and governmental services; Laks, an AVZ tax manager since 2006, focuses on partnerships and state, corporate and individual tax issues; and Lucarelli, who joined the firm in 1989, specializes in mergers & acquisitions, taxation and wealth management.

O’Connor has been with the firm since 2005 and focuses his practice primarily on federal and state tax research and planning, as well as tax audits, appeals and various trust and estate matters, including succession planning. Ruggiero, a 20-year veteran of public accounting, joined the firm in 1996 and specializes in accounting and auditing, governmental services and taxation.

Founded in 1950, AVZ – which has a satellite office in New York City and a staff of more than 80 – provides a wide range of accounting, auditing and advisory services to privately held corporations, nonprofit organizations, municipalities, government agencies and individual clients.

Since 1993, the firm has produced the annual Long Island Economic Survey & Opinion Poll, a highly regarded barometer of the regional economy as observed by Island business owners.
