In a bright advance for boater safety, an innovative dome light for powerboat and sailboat cabins created by two Long Island companies has been honored by judges at the Newport International Boat Show.
The Largo Tri-Color LED Dome Light, named best new navigation product at the prestigious Rhode Island showcase, was honored for its customer value, safety and aesthetics, according to judges. Hauppauge-based design-and-development ace Intelligent Product Solutions partnered on the Largo with Holbrook’s LED Specialists, a leading product developer in the marine, aviation and architectural markets.
The two firms created the light for Massachusetts-based marine-products manufacturer and distributor Imtra Corp., with IPS providing industrial design and mechanical engineering support to LED Specialists’ prototype.
Designed specifically for the tight confines of most boat cabins, the surface-mounted Largo’s light-emitting diodes shine either white, blue or red, with the latter two chosen specifically to protect the crew’s vision during night or other low-light operations. The 4.7-watt glow – the equivalent light output of a 30-watt halogen light – can be dimmed with easy push-button controls.
Joseph Toro, IPS’s director of industrial design, said designers had several challenges to overcome with the Largo, particularly sealing the unit against water. Toro said engineers eventually chose to abandon a “fussy gasket” that had trouble sealing the lens and instead glued the lens to the housing.
“That overcame the sealing issue,” Toro added, “and saved the cost of the gasket from the bill of materials.”
However the engineering teams got there, Imtra CEO and President Eric Braitmayer said the dimmable, low-draw, multi-color award-winner was exactly what his company was looking for.
“The Imtra Largo is the most versatile LED dome light available for small and medium-sized power- and sailboats,” Braitmayer said. “It gives our customers the ability to tailor their desired illumination while simplifying the installation.”
