In a musculoskeletal coup for the Northwell Health system, Long Island’s largest private orthopedic practice has joined the region’s largest healthcare provider.
The New Hyde Park-based health system announced Wednesday that Orlin & Cohen Orthopedic Associates LLP has come aboard, adding some 80 healthcare providers and eight Long Island offices – seven in Nassau County, one in Suffolk – to Northwell Health’s fold.
The 80 providers are among 500 total Orlin & Cohen Orthopedic Associates employees who will now become Northwell Health employees, boosting the 60,000-strong payroll of what is already New York State’s largest private employer.
Those providers include 35 board-certified physicians specializing in sports medicine, knee and hip replacements and a wide range of shoulder, foot, ankle, spine, neck, back, hand and elbow injuries – a major musculoskeletal upgrade for the health system, according to Northwell Health President and Chief Executive Michael Dowling.
Dowling on Wednesday referenced an “extraordinary partnership” with the formerly private practice and said Northwell Health was excited by the “benefits it brings to the thousands of patients who entrust us with their orthopedic care.”
“Similar to Northwell Health, Orlin & Cohen has a strong brand with an unmatched reputation for delivering exceptional care and optimizing the patient experience,” Dowling said. “Strategically, they’re a great fit for our organization.”
Orlin & Cohen Orthopedic Associates CEO Michael Passet, who will be retained as CEO of Northwell Health’s new Orlin & Cohen Medical Specialists Group, expressed similar excitement from the other side, noting the size of and breadth of the practice’s new corporate mothership.
“With 12 hospitals on Long Island and a full continuum of care that benefits people of all ages, Northwell is a great strategic partner who will help support Orlin & Cohen’s continued growth and expansion within and beyond orthopedics,” Passet said in a statement.
The Orlin & Cohen Orthopedic Associates acquisition is the second major addition announced by Northwell Health in as many days. On Tuesday, the health system said it acquired 20 percent of the Surgical Specialty Center of Westchester, a Harrison-based outpatient surgery center specializing in cosmetic, reconstructive, ophthalmologic and gynecologic surgeries, among a host of other procedures.
In addition to immediately securing 20 percent of the 34-surgeon, 10,891-square-foot, nationally accredited outpatient surgical facility, Northwell Health also reserved the right to purchase up to 51 percent of the Surgical Specialty Center within five years, according to the health system.
