At Northwell, redefining the shape of things to come

By GREGORY ZELLER // A powerful new 3D printing system is providing Northwell Health doctors hyper-realistic surgical models, easing patients’ minds and saving millions of dollars in lost operating-room time. That’s the assessment from the New Hyde Park-based health system, which this week noted it has “doubled down” on 3D printing technologies provided by Massachusetts-based developer and manufacturer Formlabs. Specifically, Northwell Health – already a Formlabs customer – has incorporated the tech firm’s powerful Form…

No. 318: On Helen Keller, Ross Perot, J.J. Abrams and Captain Video (and yes, that iced tea IS very spicy)

Welcome, welcome: It’s the midpoint of another exciting week of socioeconomic innovation, dear readers, with just seven days to go before the nation’s 242nd birthday. Mathematically, that must mean it’s June 27 out there, a.k.a. Multicultural Day in Canada and Mixed Race Day in Brazil. In the States, we have to settle for the 125th anniversary of the Great Stock Crash of 1893, which set off a four-year depression. Wire to wire: Marking the first…

The New Hyde Park-based health system announced Monday that Harris Nagler, a urologist at Northwell Health’s Lake Success-based Smith Institute for Urology, has been named president of the American Urological Association’s Urology Care Foundation Board. Based on the precepts of the national nonprofit group Baby Café USA, the Island’s first official breastfeeding “café” – in essence, it’s more of a school – was made possible…

Pediatric kidney transplant a first for Cohen Children’s

The Steven and Alexandra Cohen Children’s Medical Center has completed its first-ever pediatric kidney transplant operation. Matthew Francis, a 14-year-old from Rockaway Beach, was diagnosed in 2012 with focal segmental glomerulosis, a disease that attacks the kidney’s filtering units. The illness causes severe scarring, disrupts kidney functions and, left untreated, can eventually lead to organ failure. Earlier this month, Matthew underwent a life-saving procedure at New Hyde Park-based Cohen’s Children – making him the first pediatric kidney-transplant recipient at…
