Is there a nurse practitioner in the house? 28, actually

By GREGORY ZELLER // Three years after opening its doors, the Hofstra/Northwell nursing school is promoting its first graduating class. Twenty-eight freshly minted nurse practitioners – each specializing in either adult-gerontology acute-care nursing, psychiatric/mental health nursing or family nursing – are set to receive their degrees Friday, marking the first graduates to emerge from the Hofstra/Northwell School of Graduate Nursing and Physician Assistant Studies. The school, a joint venture of Hempstead-based Hofstra University and New…

LI hospitals, universities take part in take-back effort

By GREGORY ZELLER // Several Long Island institutions will take part in a nationwide effort to rid medicine cabinets across the land of unused, sometimes dangerous unused prescription medications. Five Northwell Health facilities on Long Island will take part in April 28’s National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day, a chance for people to safely remove unused and expired prescriptions from their homes. Also lending itself to Saturday’s cause will be Garden City’s Adelphi University, which will…

Huntington Hospital chills out with new air-cooled AC

By GREGORY ZELLER // A Long Island hospital has replaced its older air-conditioning system with a network of air-cooled “chillers” – an energy-efficient upgrade expected to create big annual savings. Huntington Hospital, part of the New Hyde Park-based Northwell Health system, announced Wednesday it has installed four 400-ton, large-capacity, air-cooled Carrier chillers, replacing the hospital’s traditional water-cooled environmental-control system. The $4.7 million project – designed to “provide more efficient cooling to … patient care areas…

Northwell, Mather finally head down the aisle

By GREGORY ZELLER // John T. Mather Memorial Hospital and the mighty Northwell Health system will officially tie the knot this week. Kenneth Roberts, president of the Port Jefferson-based hospital, and Michael Dowling, president and CEO of New Hyde Park-based Northwell Health, are scheduled to sign an agreement Thursday that assimilates Mather Hospital into the multiregional health system. Mather Hospital signed a letter of intent in July to join New York State’s largest healthcare operation….

Northwell, Cigna work it out, call off divorce

It turns out reports of Northwell Health’s split with the Cigna Health and Life Insurance Co. have been somewhat exaggerated. That very nearly wasn’t so: The health system’s hospitals, physicians, laboratories, home-health providers and other facilities and services came this close to parting ways with Cigna. But all Northwell doctors and facilities will remain in the Cigna fold as of Jan. 1. With renewal negotiations at an impasse and the current contract between the New…

Don Monti Foundation backs cancer ‘navigator’

Not every healthcare innovation involves a radical pharmaceutical or breakthrough technology. In a next-level advancement of purely human proportions, the Don Monti Memorial Research Foundation will underwrite a $95,000-a-year “cancer patient navigator” position at Huntington Hospital. The services-centric navigator will guide cancer patients through the “complexities of the healthcare system,” according to Northwell Health, including appointment scheduling and compliance with sometimes-confusing care protocols. The goal is to help each cancer patient get the best possible…

Have a lumbar sciatica? You want the O-Arm

By GREGORY ZELLER // The first Long Island spinal surgeries incorporating a state-of-the-art “intraoperative surgical imaging system” have been successfully completed, with many more to come. In early March, Robert Kerr, chief of neurosurgery at Northwell Health’s Huntington Hospital, performed a lumbar sciatica procedure on a 48-year-old Northport resident using the O-Arm, a real-time 3D-imaging system produced by Irish medical-tech giant Medtronic. About a week later, Kerr performed a lateral mass screw and rod fixation…
