For LI brewers, Craft Beer Week is a show of strength

By JIM McCUNE // With a jumpstart on this year’s American Craft Beer Week, the seventh-annual Long Island Craft Beer Week returns with a Nassau County Cask Kickoff May 11. The event’s mission is to promote patronage at Long Island’s breweries, bars and restaurants and to raise awareness of local craft-beer culture, while doing some good through the Craft Cares food drive. But for those who are new to the scene, Long Island Craft Beer…

McCune: Partly cloudy, chance of awesome in NEIPAs

By JIM McCUNE // New England India Pale Ale is a conundrum. It’s not even a recognized beer style. But this new variation on the IPA has emerged as one of the most sought-after, highest-rated, incessantly talked-about beers in America. For anyone who hasn’t heard, NEIPA is an unfiltered India Pale Ale (or Double IPA) that’s been aggressively hopped, giving it a hazy, cloudy or completely opaque appearance, not unlike orange juice. New England India…

254: A strong 4th quarter, a new STREAM center, members-only beer club and 71 Michelin stars

NOVEMBER ALREADY!?!: Yep, it’s Nov. 1, also known as All Saints Day – a national salute to all the professional parents who double-time it on Oct. 31 to meet deadlines, file reports, run staff meetings, connect with customers, complete inventories and otherwise TCB so they can rush home to take their kids trick-or-treating. We’d like to tell you to go ahead and kick off early today, but you kind of did that yesterday, didn’t you?…

Moustache: Membership (and growth) have privileges

By JIM McCUNE // The first rule of the Society for Fine Liquid Provisions: You always talk about the Society for Fine Liquid Provisions. This ain’t “Fight Club.” The members-only beer club, the brainchild of Moustache Brewing Co. co-founders Lauri and Matthew Spitz, is one of the more intriguing methods for releasing popular and rare beers, without the chaos and hurt feelings that come with the antiquated “first-come, first-serve” model. It works something like this:…

In craft brewing, tapping the power of women

By JIM MCCUNE // Though it’s a bit of a boy’s club today, craft brewing was historically a women-run enterprise, first a domestic chore dating back almost four millennia, then a craft, a cottage industry and, eventually, big business. (For some, it was even more: The Sumerians had a beer goddess named Ninkasi.) Brewing didn’t become male-dominated in Europe until the Renaissance, and it changed genders even later in America, where women remained active home…

Moustache Brewing does a little aging of its own

By JIM MCCUNE // Enjoy them now, because they grow up so quickly. We’re talking, in this case, about Riverhead’s award-winning microbrewery, Moustache Brewing Co., which turns 2 on April 30. If you’re not familiar with the Moustache story, it started back in 2012 when Lauri and Matt Spitz decided to give up their day jobs, launch a KickStarter campaign and pray they’d reach their goal of $30,000. More than 500 pledges and $31,413 later, the…

Craft brewers take another giant hop

Craft brewers expanded their market share by 13 percent in 2015, cooking up 24.5 million barrels worth $22.3 billion, the Colorado-based Brewers Association announced this week. The dollar value now represents more than a fifth of all U.S. beer sales, an increase of 16 percent year over year. “For the past decade, craft brewers have charged into the market, seeing double digit growth for eight of those years,” said Bart Watson, the association’s chief economist….

Wading once more into the crowd that loves them

By GREGORY ZELLER // Consider it a home-brewed version of Kickstarter. Riverhead’s Moustache Brewing Co., which launched following a successful 2012 campaign on the group-funding site, is once again appealing to its growing fan base – this time, to help fund new fermenting tanks essential to the microbrewery’s expansion plans. Building on their successful Growler of the Month Club, owners Lauri and Matthew Spitz have created The Moustache Brewing Co. Society for Fine Liquid Provisions,…
