At Intelligent Product Solutions, risk is their business

Do no harm: Federal ISO 14971 standards, which govern risk-management in medical devices and products, factor heavily in Intelligent Product Solutions' new Risk Management Consulting practice.

One of Long Island’s most innovative product designers is taking a proactive approach to future liability issues.

Hauppauge-based product design and development firm Intelligent Product Solutions has launched a new Risk Management Consulting practice dedicated to incorporating product-safety protocols into new product designs – an important addition for IPS clients, according to Intelligent Product Solutions Principal Systems Engineer Ed Lanzilotta, who leads the new practice area.

Most product-design teams “take great care to produce products that not only perform well, but are safe to use,” according to Lanzilotta, but “the formal application of risk-management practice is often overlooked” – a potential danger to customers and corporations alike.

Enter the new Risk Management Consulting practice, which “leverages our broad technical background and extensive experience in product development and risk management,” the engineer noted.

Ed Lanzilotta: Safety first.

The practice is built to offer a wide range of services, including risk-management planning – which defines potential risks and strategies for avoiding them – and risk assessment, including hazard analysis, fault-tree analysis and Failure Mode and Effects Analysis.

The new group will also zero in on risk mitigation and monitoring, which assesses a new or improved product’s most significant operational risks and strategizes accordingly, and when appropriate will adhere strictly to ISO 14971 standards, which govern risk-management and risk-mitigation strategies in medical devices.

The risk-management division marks aggressive IPS’s latest spinoff. Most recently, the award-winning product-design company spun up Intelligent Cloudcare, an all-in IT group designed to help small and midsized businesses manage networks and analyze infrastructure.

With its Risk Management Consulting practice, IPS – a subsidiary of Forward Industries since 2018 – is being more proactive than ever regarding product safety and protecting the interests of clients, clients’ customers and IPS itself.

It’s also taking extra steps to safeguard IPS clients’ bottom lines, according to Lanzilotta.

“Early and consistent integration of risk management greatly improves the product-development process, enabling a product manufacturer to reduce the product development timeline with a higher-quality product,” the systems engineer said. “The IPS Risk Management Consulting team is uniquely qualified to assist product-design teams with incorporating risk management into their design and development processes.”
