Mount Sinai South Nassau has delivered another significant healthcare upgrade to the City of Long Beach.

The flagship Long Island hospital of the New York City-based Mount Sinai Health System – which already operates the freestanding Emergency Center at Long Beach on East Bay Drive and multiple primary care practices on the barrier island (including a clinic formerly located on West Park Avenue, more on that in a moment) – has opened a new, state-of-the-art walk-in primary-care center on the Long Beach Boardwalk.

The new facility – which sets appointments and also accepts walk-in patients without appointments – officially began seeing patients in early November but held its grand-opening ceremony Tuesday.

Designed to offer the latest in diagnostic and preventive services, it’s stocked with all the cutting-edge equipment necessary for acute injury and illness care, standard physical examinations, chronic-disease management, vaccinations, immunizations and other healthcare staples critical to Long Beach residents.

Mount Sinai South Nassau President Adhi Sharma said the new center – which has folded in the primary-care facility formerly located on West Park Avenue – highlights a “continuing effort to keep our promise to the city and to our patients on the barrier island.”

Adhit Sharma: Promises kept.

“Serving the medical needs of Long Beach residents remains a key priority for Mount Sinai South Nassau,” Sharma noted. “We remain committed to offering residents the services they need, from emergency care to cardiology to GI and other specialty services.”

Now, Long Beach residents can benefit from those services in a walk-in primary-care center that’s “close to home,” the president added.

The new facility opens adjacent to The Breeze, a new oceanfront condominium complex that began welcoming tenants earlier this year. The high-end rental units and the medical facility form the backbone of the Superblock, a large-scale, multiuse reconstruction project by Garden City-based builder B2K Development (formerly Engel Burman).

In addition to direct healthcare services, the new primary-care center offers residents a rotating schedule of seasonal community-health lectures, physical- and mental-health valuations and preventative services, including blood-pressure and body-mass index screenings, diabetes testing and memory assessments.

The facility is staffed by an internal medicine and primary care physician and a nurse practitioner, along with medical assistants and other support personnel. Regular hours of operation are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, though Mount Sinai South Nassau may adjust those hours during the island’s off-season, according to a hospital statement.

Noting a significant convenience factor “to both our residents and visitors alike,” Long Beach City Manager Daniel Creighton applauded Mount Sinai South Nassau for continuing to improve its barrier island healthcare services – a major turnaround since the Long Beach Medical Center was forced to close after suffering heavy damage during 2012’s Superstorm Sandy.

Cut to cure: Dignitaries and special guests officially welcome Long Beach’s new primary-care facility.

“The location lends itself to facilitating further collaboration between Mount Sinai and our lifeguards and other first responders and should prove to be a valuable resource for them,” Creighton added. “Mount Sinai’s continued investment into the health of our residents is greatly appreciated.”

All told, Mount Sinai South Nassau – the entity formed in 2018, when South Nassau Communities Hospital merged with the Mount Sinai Health System and became the system’s Long Island flagbearer – has now invested more than $47 million in Long Beach facilities, including the aforementioned freestanding Emergency Department, another primary-care facility on Franklin Boulevard and Mount Sinai Doctors-Long Beach, a multispecialty medical arts pavilion on East Bay Drive.

Together, the localized network offers Long Beach residents a comprehensive array of medical services including X-rays, ultrasound imaging and electrocardiograms, with specialties ranging from cardiology and gastroenterology to urology and geriatric care.

And it represents a true commitment to the city, according to Mount Sinai South Nassau Advisory Board Chairman Anthony Cancellieri.

“Mount Sinai South Nassau is committed to identifying and advancing opportunities to provide healthcare services and programs that the community needs and deserves,” Cancellieri said in a statement. “This (new) practice is part of our ongoing effort to fulfill that commitment.”
