Super-scrubs: Northwell fights the forces of infection

They don’t come with capes or cowls, they’re not powered by an indestructible “arc reactor” and they can’t shrink surgeons to ant-size, but new super-suits are making heroic impressions on the Northwell Health system. The innovative scrubs and lab coats, created by Florida-based medical manufacturer Vestagen Protective Technologies, can’t stop bullets, but they can repel dangerous microorganisms – a huge infection-fighting advantage for staffers and patients alike. Northwell Health first incorporated the contaminant-busting uniforms –…

Northwell fields new breast-surgery tracker

The Northwell Health Cancer Institute has begun use of a tiny tracking device, just cleared by the FDA, that pinpoints tumors in breast surgeries. The system, called the SAVI SCOUT, uses a reflector disk, implanted before surgery, that steers surgeons during lumpectomy and biopsy procedures. Until now, doctors had to thread a wire into the breast, an uncomfortable and time-consuming procedure that required patients to show up hours before their scheduled surgery. “Breast cancer surgery…
