The North Shore-LIJ Health System has formed a “first on Long Island” clinical affiliation with ENT and Allergy Associates, an LLP treating over 70,000 monthly patients across New York and New Jersey.
The union of one of the nation’s largest health systems – slated to be rechristened Northwell Health in January – and the private ear, nose and throat specialist known as ENTA, bridges community-based and academic healthcare and “ensures a continuum of services from primary to tertiary pediatric ENT treatment,” according to North Shore-LIJ.
Andrea Vambutas, chairwoman of otolaryngology at North Shore University Hospital and the LIJ Medical Center, said the health system has “long been aware” of the growing presence of ENTA across Long Island.
“The affiliation means that pediatric patients can be transferred from their doctor’s office to North Shore-LIJ facilities …. for complex issues, and return for follow-up care back in their own communities,” Vambutas said in a statement. “We are extremely gratified that we have been able to form an alliance that holds such promise.”
Included in the agreement are new clinical research initiatives covering a wide range of practice areas – one of several advantages the new affiliation promises to patients of both the health system and the private practice.
“We have long recognized the benefits to our patients that an affiliation like this will yield,” said ENTA CEO Robert Glazer.
ENT and Allergy Associates – which operates facilities across Westchester, Putnam, Orange, Dutchess, Rockland, Nassau and Suffolk counties, as well as New York City and New Jersey – provides general adult and pediatric ear, nose, throat and allergy-related care. Other practice areas include reconstructive surgery, inner ear disorders, clinical immunology and sleep-related services.
The practice already has several clinical alliances in place, including affiliations with NYC’s Mount Sinai Hospital and the Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx.
Prior to the clinical affiliation announced Monday, ENTA already had a similar tertiary agreement in place with North Shore-LIJ, providing pediatric consultations and treatment on a referral basis, as well as a long-standing partnership with the American Cancer Society focused on the education and treatment of patients with smoking-related disorders, including cancer.
ENT and Allergy Associates boasts over 170 physicians in 41 offices, including clinics in Bay Shore, Garden City, Lake Success, Patchogue, Port Jefferson, Riverhead and Smithtown, with an additional facility slated to open soon in Hauppauge.
North Shore-LIJ now operates 21 hospitals and roughly 450 outpatient physician practices around New York State, managing over 6,600 beds, 28,000 nurses and doctors and a total workforce eclipsing 61,000 employees, making it the state’s largest private employer. The health system’s properties include hospitals in Bay Shore, Glen Cove, Huntington, Manhasset, New Hyde Park, Plainview, Riverhead, Syosset and Valley Stream.
