Praise for Westbury’s $10M downtown award

By GREGORY ZELLER // Downtown Westbury will get a $10 million lift through Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s Downtown Revitalization Initiative. Cuomo, who’s been touring New York’s 10 economic zones this week handing out $10 million stipends to reward downtown planning proposals, visited The Space at Westbury theater Thursday afternoon to pump up community-revitalization efforts in the village’s downtown area. The Downtown Revitalization Initiative, first announced in Cuomo’s 2016 State of the State address, is a comprehensive…

East Hampton wins microgrid funding

State microgrid program ups the ante

Another $8 million is up for grabs in Phase II of the NY Prize microgrid competition, officially kicked off Wednesday by Gov. Andrew Cuomo. Following 2015’s $8.3 million Phase I, which offered relatively small $100,000 awards to help 83 winning statewide communities conduct feasibility studies on their indigenous microgrid proposals, Phase II will select eight projects with the best engineering and business plans – with awards up to $1 million each to help bring those…

State seeks development plans for Republic

Empire State Development is seeking proposals to develop more than 40 acres of land at East Farmingdale’s Republic Airport. Albany’s main economic-development engine has issued an RFP to revitalize 41.5 acres at the New York Department of Transportation-airport, spread across five parcels. Respondents to the request may submit proposals for all five parcels, which range in size from 5 to 18 acres, or for any combination of individual parcels, including single-parcel plans, according to ESD….

Mobile ticketing, nicer stations, connectivity

Mobile ticketing may soon make travel on the Long Island Rail Road a little easier. Included in Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s proposed $8 billion MTA makeover – the eighth proposal in his statewide, $50 billion-plus Christmas in January tour – is quicker incorporation of mobile ticketing payment methods across the MTA system, including the LIRR. Cuomo’s plan: Introduce mobile ticketing to LIRR passengers within six months, with the railroad fully mobilized by the end of 2016….

Add a little amber to the orange and blue

The Blue Point Brewing Co. is going to the World Series. A pint (or six) of the Patchogue craft brewery’s flagship Toasted Lager is on the line – along with other spoils from across the Empire State – as part of Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s World Series bet with Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon. In addition to wearing the other team’s jersey to work, the loser will deliver a care package of home-grown goodies. In Cuomo’s case, that…

The majority of the support – 62 percent – came from Democrats, with the program resonating the strongest geographically with NYC and its suburbs. Only 45 percent of upstate residents said they supported the benefits. Start-Up has been…

State’s $160M renewables program sidesteps LI

BY GREGORY ZELLER New York State’s new $160 million clean-energy initiative is an environmental and economic-development boon of the highest order. But not for Long Island. In fact, the funding program announced April 7 by Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo – designed specifically to grow large-scale clean-energy projects – could deliver a staggering blow to the Island’s innovation economy by luring clean-gen projects elsewhere. The program is funded by the New York State Energy Research and…
