Northwell Health President and CEO Michael Dowling is Long Island’s best chief executive and one of the planet’s top healthcare execs.
So says Glassdoor, the circa-2007 job-listings and aggregate-review site where employees (and former employees) can anonymously rate companies and their managers, to better inform job-seekers about the corporate environment.
Dowling was named one of the Highest Rated CEOs of 2017 by the job site, which compiled employee feedback from thousands of companies to rank the top 100 chief executives in North America and parts of Europe.
The head honcho of the New Hyde Park-based health system earned a Glassdoor Employees’ Choice Award while debuting at No. 67 on the annual top-100 list. He ranked fourth among healthcare executives nationally and was the highest-rated Long Island business leader.
Dowling said he was “honored to be recognized for my leadership,” especially since the recognition comes from Northwell Health employees, whom he considers “my colleagues.”
“The truth is employees at every level are truly the lifeblood of our health system,” Dowling said Wednesday. “Our healthcare professionals and the support teams that treat our patients at the most vulnerable times of their lives require not only expert clinical skills but compassion as well.”
Dowling received a 91 percent approval rating based on anonymous, voluntary reviews shared by Northwell Health employees over the past year. The average CEO approval rating among the roughly 700,000 companies reviewed on Glassdoor is 67 percent.
Employee reviews of a company’s corporate environment incorporate several factors, including overall job satisfaction, opinion of senior management and whether the employee approves or disapproves of the CEO’s performance.
Robert Hohman, Glassdoor’s co-founder and chief executive, said the CEO approval ratings “correlate to overall employee satisfaction and trust in senior leadership.”
“Which contributes to long-term employee engagement, ultimately helping an employer’s recruiting and retention efforts,” Hohman noted in an announcement of the 2017 CEO honorees.
Dowling joined Northwell Health in 1995 as executive vice president and chief operating officer after 12 years in New York State government, including a term as commissioner of the NYS Department of Social Services. He became the health system’s president and CEO in 2002 and has overseen Northwell’s expansion to 22 hospitals, more than 550 outpatient facilities and 62,000-plus employees, making it the state’s largest healthcare provider – by number of practitioners and patients – and largest private employer.
Among other efforts to set a caring tone throughout the health system, the CEO participates in a weekly orientation program called Beginnings, which allows him to express Northwell Health’s vision and expectations directly to roughly 150 new employees at a time.
Joseph Moscola, Northwell Health’s senior vice president and chief people officer, said those who work with Dowling “are clearly thrilled – but not necessarily surprised – by his selection as one of the nation’s highest-rated CEOs.”
“Given his long tenure with the organization, hands-on management style and approachable manner, Michael Dowling is revered by employees at all levels of the health system,” Moscola said in a statement.
Glassdoor’s 2017 list of beloved CEOs was topped by Benno Dorer, chief executive of The Clorox Co., the California-based manufacturer and distributor of consumer and professional products. Dorer received a 99 percent approval rating from Clorox employees.
While several New York-based CEOs made the list – including Cathy Engelbert of New York City-based Deloitte (No. 40 overall), Lloyd Blankfein of NYC-based Goldman Sachs (No. 74) and Robin Hays of Queens-based JetBlue (No. 84) – Dowling was the only Long Island representative.
Other notables earning 2017 Glassdoor honors included SpaceX CEO Elon Musk (No. 8 overall), Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg (No. 10) and former NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg (No. 26), chief executive of Bloomberg LP.
