A next-generation surgical center uniquely suited to women’s physical and psychological needs is heading to Glen Cove.
Community leaders joined top Northwell Health brass and Glen Cove Hospital executives for a groundbreaking ceremony Wednesday, symbolically starting construction of the 25,000-square-foot Katz Women’s Surgical Center – a $10 million medical mecca designed to accommodate state-of-the-art surgeries and to directly address disparities in women’s healthcare.
Featuring dedicated patient parking, a “well-appointed lounge” and 32 private care and recovery bays, the Surgical Center is projected by Northwell Health to be a “tranquil and welcoming” setting, with “specialized nurse navigators” and other professional staffers escorting patients from point to point on their surgical journey.
Katz Women’s will also boast cutting-edge surgical tools and techniques, including the latest in robot-assisted surgeries and minimally invasive procedures.

Cool Katz: Iris and Saul, always beneficial.
Advanced robotics will factor into new mastectomy and breast-reconstruction surgeries, while other advanced surgeries focused specifically on women’s issues – including gynecological, urological and skin cancer-related procedures – are also on tap.
The Glen Cove Hospital expansion, slated to be completed by late 2024, is being developed through Northwell Health’s Katz Institute for Women’s Health, a spearhead dedicated to fostering necessary upgrades in women’s healthcare. The institute, the Surgical Center and other Northwell entities are named for generous Northwell Health Foundation benefactors and longtime Glen Cove residents Iris and Saul Katz.
“We are delighted to support the new women’s surgical center, which will provide comprehensive care to meet women’s specific surgical needs as well as provide emotional support for patients in the region and beyond,” the philanthropists said in a statement.
Calling it a “first of its kind for Northwell and the region,” Katz Women’s Surgical Center Vice President Neil Tanna applauded a potential model for women’s healthcare centers around the nation.
“We are designing a model of care that could serve as a national destination,” Tanna noted. “The program is multidisciplinary [and] integrated with a team of experts who provide the highest quality, patient-centered, female-focused surgical care.”
Glen Cove Hospital Executive Director Kerri Scanlon counted “very few separate centers of excellence for women’s surgery” across the country.
“This entire project is so meaningful to the community and personal for the Katz family,” Scanlon said. “This is their hospital, and a gift of this magnitude means everything to Glen Cove.
“We will forever be grateful for Iris and Saul’s tremendous generosity and kindness, and their desire to advance care for women.”
