No. 30: Elaine Gross – The hero Long Island needed

Justice for all: Elaine Gross. who launched the ERASE Racism Initiative while working for the Long Island Community Foundation in 2001, has retired as the social-justice organization's president.

Elaine Gross has made a career of fighting racial injustices – in housing, education and other key issues.

The founder of Syosset-based ERASE Racism has led decades of change for the better, always taking a graceful approach to the ongoing culture war, always exposing the ugly underbelly of systemic racism, always promoting progressive solutions across Long Island and beyond.

Now, 21 years after founding the ERASE Racism Initiative, Elaine has stepped down and handed the reins to new President Laura Harding, a hard-boiled attorney with a long résumé and her own impressive track record of civil-rights victories.

In today’s episode, now-President Emeritus Gross joins Spark host Gregory Zeller to reflect on her long odyssey as a social justice champion – and her highest hopes for a future Long Island free of systemic racism.
