LIBN parent selling to community paper group

GateHouse Media CEO Kirk Davis will oversee the acquired Dolan properties.

GateHouse Media, a shopper and community news publisher with hundreds of titles in small markets across the United States, has agreed to acquire Dolan LLC, the parent company of Long Island Business News.

Once-public Dolan was acquired and taken private by Boston’s Bayside Capital in 2014. Still headquartered in Minneapolis, the company operates 35 print and online publications providing industry-specific news for the legal, financial, real estate and government affairs sectors in 15 markets.

“We see significant potential for both companies as we share experiences, products, and new revenue growth strategies,” GateHouse CEO Kirk Davis said in a statement.

The sale is expected to close over the next several weeks. The Dolan unit will operate as a separate division within GateHouse, reporting directly to Davis.

There was no immediate word on what effect the acquisition might have on staffing. In a letter to Dolan employees quoted by LIBN, Davis said his firm looked “forward to partnering with you to build upon the great franchises you have developed and to sharing our best thinking across markets.”

GateHouse owns 78 dailies, 235 weekly newspapers, 91 shoppers and six yellow-page directories.
